Mary Jane Slot Canyon is one of Moab’s hidden gems – the “trail” is a creek the entire way, which leads to a 30 ft waterfall. This is a great trail to do when Moab is too hot, and you, the dogs, or kids need to cool off. The canyon walls get higher as you hike further into the canyon, and eventually will reach upwards of 100 ft! Professor Creek and Mary Jane Canyon Trail is a 7.6 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Moab, Utah that features a waterfall and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, and nature trips and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail. Mary Jane Richardson and her husband’s legacy live on in the naming of Mary Jane Canyon and Professor Creek. This hike goes up an active stream bed into a canyon that grows deeper and narrower before the hike’s turnaround, a double spouted waterfall. What Makes It Great Much of the activities in the Moab area are dry and baking in the sun. Professor Creek is a small stream that joins the Colorado River 20 miles northeast of Moab. The creek flows year-round, along a canyon (known as Mary Jane Canyon) which is shallow for most of its length but one mile of the central section becomes fairly narrow and up to 100 feet deep. At first, the sides of the canyon were only about 20-25 feet high, but as we hiked deeper and deeper into Professor Creek & Mary Jane Canyon, the red rock walls rose to 80+ feet. The well established trail was easy to follow, but there were numerous times were the trail split into 2-3 different options, eventually all leading back to the same “main” trail.
